A shapefile is an efficient and compact method of distributing data. In order for a shapefile to work all 8 separate files must be in the same directory in order to access the data. If you have trouble accessing shapefiles make sure that the zip file you received has the eight following files with these extensions: .cpg, .dbf, .prj, .sbn, .shp, .sbx,and two corresponding AutoCAD file extensions

A KMZ file is the compressed version of a KML file and can be used to view and create geographic data in google earth.
